Super(?) Bowl 41 - Dansk Edition
Well the Super Bowl was a study in contrasts for me over here in Copenhagen. If the Super Bowl is a national holiday back home where we worship the unification of sport and consumer culture -- then in Denmark it is a chance for a show of bleary eyed expatriotism-- as Americans come from far and wide to pack into tight bars and explain American Football to silly Europeans.
Let's start looking at the good, the bad and the ugly from Super Bowl 41 - Danish edition.
Good- I correctly picked the game, only missing the score by 3 points! (Who would've thought Adam would miss a field goal!)
Bad- The Colts won... ugggggggh.
Good- I left before the end and didn't have to say Jim Irsay holding our trophy or Peyton getting Tom's award.
Bad- The Colts won... uugggggggh.
Good- Being in the bar for the opening kickoff (What a way to start the game!) and the jaws of Colts fans simultaneously dropping world wide.
Bad- Having to listen to those Colts fans the rest of the game.
Surreal- The pregame show was based out of London I think-- and we were treated to in studio analysts DON JOHNSON and Cecil Martin. (Who I think was like a backup FB on the Eagles in Madden 2004) But seriously... Don Johnson!?! From Miami Vice? What was his area of expertise, cruising the streets of Miami around the stadium like 20 years ago? But it gets better... Instead of breaking down the game they got anyone in the UK who knew who either of the teams in the game were, mostly from soccer players from the States, and had them pick the winner.
Good- They were serving Miller Genuine Draft in the bar, it is an American holiday after all. (I also want to clarify that this blog does not endorse Carlsberg's claim that it is 'Probably the Best Beer in the World' this blog still prefers Miller products.)
Bad - We didn't get the American commercials.
Good? - We got pre-produced tapes of the Miami Dolphins CHEERLEADERS explaining American football... "Oh, so thattt's what the yellow line means!"
Bad - Cigarette smoke.
Good- 24 hour 7/11's and the hot dogs they sell at all hours of the day. (ps. the 7/11's are sooo much nicer here than at home, go figure?)
Bad - 12:30 am kickoff time.
Worse- 2:34 am 96N nightbus to Bispejerg st.
Not as bad as it could've been - Missing the second half.
Good- I'll be in the United States of America for next year's edition.
Great- The birth of yet another cousin! (or rather second cousin?) Anyways CONGRATS! to Mike and Kristi especially on bringing Nick Pedroli into the world on Super Bowl Sunday. I told Mike I plan on seeing little Nick in Super Bowl 64 for his 23rd birthday. (Now can someone please explain to me how a baby with all that Greek and Italian blood came out with red hair?)

Don Johnson???? That is truly amazing. And maybe they got soccer players to give analysis because someone said "get football players to comment on this event" and no one stopped to explain the difference to the intern on the task!
I held Nick Pedroli last night, and fell head over heels in love.
